Planning

Using the Wacom pen directly onscreen is a natural and easy way to create plans and communicate changes by drawing and editing geographic data in a visual manner.

AEC

Benefits for Visual Planning

  • Cut production costs by digitizing new GIS data by drawing the data with a pen instead of scanning or digitizing using a mouse.
  • Optimize iterative planning methods by sketching Alternative Plan Scenarios integrating Wacom’s pen-on-screen input with palette-based GIS drawing and drafting tools.
  • Incorporate planning stakeholders and improve collaboration between planning team members and public respondents in Participatory Land Use Planning utilizing Wacom interactive technology for GIS.
  • Easy-to-use technology opens up GIS editing to end users who haven’t been trained in GIS because working on digital maps with a pen on the LCD display is as natural as drawing on paper maps.

GIS

Use case

GIS GIS technology can help both land-use organizations and planning departments simulate and model multiple planning alternatives and communicate the effects of proposed modifications to planning team members and the public. Integrating GIS software with Wacom pen technology democratizes the access to, and development of, GIS databases used in the planning process.  GIS specialists can focus on data modeling, database design, data analysis and software customization while leveraging Wacom’s ease-of-use to facilitate stakeholder engagement much easier than in the past.  Decision-making support tools are intuitive to use because they allow participants to draw relevant information directly on the surface of a Wacom pen display in a visually immersive, information rich graphic environment. Project managers, land use planners, private landowners, and public community residents collaborate actively in the planning process.  Participatory Planning and Participatory GIS revolutionize land use planning because stakeholders can communicate their ideas and concerns with the same ease and simplicity of drawing on a map.  In addition to easily incorporating the feedback from a wide range of participants, Wacom interactive technology provides the planning team improved technology to communicate about the complex implications of land use alternatives under consideration.  This educates the planning participants and improves consensus building in real-time.  Sketching, drawing and annotating on digital maps with Wacom’s pens drives the collaborative planning process and speeds well-informed decision making about changes to the planning and design of the built environment.
