Step 1:
Let's start by bumping the mid-tones up a bit with a curves adjustment layer--click on the adjustment layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette and choose "Curves". Now, hold down the Command key (Control key for PC users) and click on the area we want to adjust--this automatically sets that point on the curve. To bring the levels up, simply click on the target point and use the up arrow key. Don't worry about how this is affecting the other areas of the image, we'll take care of that in the next step.
