Handwritten signatures – more important than ever
Although it may seem counterintuitive, workflow digitization makes handwritten signatures more relevant than ever. This year’s Connected Ink features two sessions that explain exactly why that is.
The forensic document examiner’s view
In the first session, forensic document examiner and globally renowned handwriting expert Niko Kalantzis uncovers a fundamental misunderstanding about digital signing. He argues that rather than people having to adapt to technology, technology should be adapted to what people are already comfortable with. Signing your name has been the most familiar and natural way to confirm an important decision or prove your identity for centuries – so why shouldn’t it remain so in the digital world?
He goes on to explain why signing by hand with a digital pen is actually superior to other forms of digital signatures from a legal and security perspective, as well as contributing to a better customer experience.
Finally, Niko explores the meaning and relevance in everyday life of the EU’s eIDAS regulations on digital signing, and how they help ensure signed documents stand up to legal scrutiny.
Computer Union: Preventing signature fraud in Thailand
How do you prevent signature fraud during financial services transactions? The second signature-focused session features an interview with leading Thai system integrator Computer Union. It’s developers have built a highly effective digital document workflow solution using cutting edge Wacom technology.
When one of Computer Union’s financial services clients wanted to digitize its customer document solutions, there were several requirements to fulfill:
- The solution should retain a fast, familiar customer signing experience while dramatically reducing the cost and effort of managing paper documents.
- Additionally, customers should have the flexibility to sign at the service providers premises, or via an employee’s mobile device at their own home or elsewhere.
- And finally, there should be some form of verification technology in place to help prevent attempted signature fraud.

Firstly, the client’s document workflow is now 100% digital, saving almost a million sheets of paper per month, and so making a significant contribution to the company’s sustainability and cost saving goals.
Secondly, the end customer’s familiar pen-centric signing experience has been maintained, but the workflow involved has been accelerated from 30 minutes to 10 minutes per customer.
