FAQs

The Cintiq Companion is a combination of a Cintiq Pen Display and a powerful PC using latest Intel® Core™ processor technology and Windows 8.1 operating system. (Windows® 7 is available on the Intel® Core™ i7 with Intel® vPro™ technology (DTH-W1310E) configuration. It allows creative professionals to draw, edit images and create using their favorite professional software, e.g. Adobe® Photoshop® or Autodesk® SketchBook® Pro while working anywhere. Desktop Cintiqs displays require an attached computer and are not intended for mobile use.

The Cintiq Companion is like a Cintiq 13HD with multi-touch but with computing power and operating system (Windows 8) when disconnected from a PC or Mac. It can be used in two ways.

Wacom works very hard to keep Cintiq products affordable. However, they are a number of reasons why Cintiqs may seem more expensive than standard tablet PCs.
  • Wacom Cintiq Companion has been developed to meet the needs of creative professional users. The industrial design has been optimized to support the workflow, the component selection to support powerful system performance and materials to meet high quality expectations.
  • The whole product is custom-made for Wacom.
  • In particular, the LCD screen and the pen performance require extensive modification in order to provide professional quality stylus performance.
Compared to UltrabookTM laptops similarly equipped with 8 GB memory, 512 GB solid state drive, a 13.3” multi-touch screen and a professional stylus, the Cintiq Companion compares very favourably. For professional artists and designers, Cintiq is a good investment because it significantly increases their efficiency and productivity, allowing them to complete more work in the same amount of time.
The Cintiq Companion was designed specifically for artists and other digital content creators. As such, it has some unique features not found on the MS Surface Pro or other tablets:
  • Larger screen size compared to most – 13.3”, with a resolution of 2560 x 1440. This makes drawing easier.
  • Matte display surface with to support best drawing with authentic pen-on-paper feeling. Most tablets have a shiny surface which does not offer enough friction for comfortable drawing.
  • Latest Intel® Core™ processor technology with premium components such as 512GB Solid State Drive. Thus the Cintiq Companion can run professional creative software such as Adobe® Photoshop® or Autodesk® Maya. Most tablets are much less powerful.
  • Full professional stylus
    • 2048 levels of pressure (versus 1028 on other tablets)
    • Pen tilt: the stylus tilts like a real brush and the professional software will reflect the angle in the drawing.
    • Rotation: the stylus can be rotated along the tablet axis and the professional software will adapt the brush stroke accordingly (Art Pen only, sold separately)
    • Side switches for shortcuts
    • Eraser
    • Everything about the Pro Pen is designed for precision, control and comfort. The ergo flare keeps your fingers from sliding as you work; the materials are soft to the touch. Other tablets have a thin stylus which is only intended for pointing and selecting.
  • A stable stand that can take the weight and pressure of a person drawing on the screen without the tablet bending or moving. The stand can be used in 3 different angles (as well as flat) for more comfortable drawing.
  • Six ExpressKeys (buttons) are for shortcuts used with professional graphics software. You can customize them to fit your workflow. This is a unique feature which no other tablets offer.
  • On-screen controls (soft keys). These are like ExpressKeys and can be used for program shortcuts in professional graphics software. Four banks of eight keys or sliders can be used at a time and are usually assigned to the four positions of the Rocker Ring. They can also be assigned to the ExpressKeys if preferred.
  • Sturdy pen carrying case for the stylus and spare nibs
  • Soft case with space for the stylus, cables and optional Wireless Bluetooth® keyboard (available through Wacom eStores).
Wacom has a history of developing products that meet the needs of its customers, and we received large amounts of customer feedback asking us to develop a portable professional Cintiq. Our customers told us that the tablet PCs currently available on the consumer market are not sufficient for the needs of creative professionals and enthusiasts. Hence, Wacom developed a professional creative tablet with Intel® Core™ processors and Windows 8.1 designed specifically for professional creatives:

  • Outstanding pen performance and ergonomics with 2048 levels of pressure and tilt
  • Cintiq® Connect technology that adapts easily to the work experience you want, where you need it.  Use it as a powerful stand-alone Windows 8.1 tablet or attach it to a Mac or PC as a Cintiq display
  • ExpressKeys and Rocker Ring for fast access to shortcut keys and frequently used functions
  • On-screen controls to provide more access to shortcuts and other functions
  • An excellent 13.3” screen, which is an optimal size for drawing while remaining portable
  • A non-glossy surface for authentic pen-on-paper feeling
  • Stable creative stand with a range of angles that can accommodate the pressure of drawing
  • Support for both left- and right- handed use
  • Industrial Design especially developed to meet customers’ needs and support their workflow

Naming a product is always difficult and everyone has an opinion. This product is intended to go with you, wherever you want to create, and we hope it will be your constant companion.
In most countries, the Cintiq Companion is available directly from the Wacom eStore and selected retail partners.
Both the Cintiq Companion and Cintiq Companion 2 are designed for professional creatives and offer the Wacom pen and touch experience on a powerful LCD display. They are streamlined for productivity and mobility, and share the same tablet design. The Cintiq Companion 2 is the successor of the Cintiq Companion with a broader feature-set. It is a higher performing computer powered by latest Intel® Core™ processor technology running the Windows 8.1 operating system. Further, Cintiq Companion 2 can be thought of as two products in one. Use it as a powerful stand-alone Windows 8 PC with Cintiq capabilities or attach it to a Mac or PC with Cintiq Connect technology and use it as a Cintiq display. Like all other Cintiqs, it has been designed specifically to run creative software; the high resolution (2560 x 1440) screen, 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity, ExpressKeysTM, and the well-known professional pen features
(support varies according to software application) all specifically address the needs of creative professionals. Cintiq Companion 2 has better connectivity (more USB 3.0 ports, integrated SDXC card reader and Cintiq Connect technology), six ExpressKeys and an improved creative stand.
The decision depends on your individual needs. Each configuration has been developed to support various use cases. On Wacom.com there are detailed explanations and comparisons of all configurations.
Wacom chose Windows 8 operating system for the Cintiq Companion since it is designed for touch. Windows® 7 doesn’t fully support touch capabilities. Apple OS X does not run on these devices. Apple does not make their operating system available to other manufacturers. Linux was not a viable option since the Cintiq Companion creative tablets are designed for professionals who primarily use Adobe Photoshop® or Autodesk® software, which runs on Macs and PCs.
Cintiq Companion performance varies by configuration. Please check your processing needs and select the right one for you.
The Cintiq Companion has both a multi-touch screen and a Windows 8 on-screen keyboard so a physical keyboard is not required. However, if you do a lot of typing or prefer a separate keyboard, we offer an accessory. The Wireless Bluetooth® Keyboard has a slim design and fits easily into the soft case that comes with the Cintiq Companion. (Case is available as an accessory for the Intel® Core™ i3, 64 GB, (DTH-W1310T) configuration).
Most customers buy a Cintiq Companion to use on-the-go and a VESA mount is usually intended for stationary desktop use. Also, adding a VESA mount would mean increasing weight and thickness of the device, which is something most customers do not want.
Yes. Many customers asked for a Kensington Lock Slot with the Cintiq Companion. Thus, all Cintiq Companion configurations support a Kensington Lock Slot.
Microsoft requires us to inform customers that the Cintiq Companion is a Specialized PC device. To meet the needs of graphics professionals, Wacom moved the Windows Home button to the side of the bezel (with Microsoft’s approval). This provides better functionality for professional creative use. Consequently, the Cintiq Companion is certified for Windows 8 as a Specialized PC (SPC). While we are not aware of any compatibility issues, as part of the Windows 8 certification program, we are obliged to inform customers that certain Windows 8 features or functionalities may not work as expected.

Here is the message that we are required to use on our external materials:

The Cintiq Companion has been certified for Windows 8 as a Specialized PC (SPC). The SPC certification program allows for the certification of commercial devices designed with industry specific features that conflict with the standard Windows 8 certification requirements. As a result, certain features or functionality of Windows 8 may not work as expected.  For complete details, including information about features which are not in compliance with the standard Windows 8 certification requirements go to cintiqcompanion@wacom.com.

Yes, you can give presentations using either the Cintiq. Your Cintiq Companion has a mini DisplayPort which, when used with an adaptor, can be connected to most projectors.
Yes. The Cintiq Companion has a mini DisplayPort and SuperSpeed USB 3.0 ports, so you can easily connect to other devices including a desktop Cintiq such as the Cintiq 27QHD. You many need an adaptor to connect to other monitors; these adaptors are inexpensive and widely available.
If Windows 8.1 is set to use larger fonts (150%), pen calibration targets won’t appear on the screen. To change this, go to the Control Panel on your PC and select Display. Change the font size to Medium – 125% or Small – 100%. Selecting larger fonts changes the size of every item on the display, not only text.
Each of the four possible tablet orientations requires a separate pen calibration. The first time you change orientations you will be presented with a calibration screen. If you have dismissed the calibration screen you can open it again from the Wacom Center.

Hold your Cintiq Companion on both sides when connecting the cable. Make sure the identifying marks on the plug are pointing downwards. Plug it straight into the Cintiq and listen for a double click. If you don’t hear both clicks, re-attach the cable. Note that due to technical reasons, the plug for the Cintiq Companion and the Cintiq 13HD are inserted the opposite way around.

To access the Cintiq Companion display settings, ensure the Cintiq is set up as an extended display on your PC.
Use the Wacom Display Settings Utility. You can also launch it from the Wacom Desktop Center.
Go to the Control Panel on your PC or Preferences on your Mac.  Select Display and change the Cintiq Companion to the primary display and the cursor will appear on the Cintiq. The Cintiq Companion has to be the primary display.

Yes, you just need to keep a microSD card inserted in your Cintiq Companion. This data storage will be seen by your desktop to transfer your files to your companion.

In some instances, the Cintiq Companion is identified by Windows as the default audio device. If you lose the sound on your PC after installing the Cintiq Companion, simply follow these steps to quickly restore sound:

Windows® 7:

  • Go to the Control Panel
  • Select "Hardware and Sound"
  • Select “Manage Audio Devices”
  • Right click on "Cintiq Companion"
  • Select "Disable"
  • Select "Apply"
  • Click "OK"

Windows 8:

Press Start +X to open Window System Menu
Select Control Panel from System Menu
Select “Hardware and Sound”
Right Click on the “Cintiq Companion”
Select “Disable”
Select “Apply”
Click “Ok”

Many factors influence how much use time you get out of a battery charge. Here are some of variables you can change:
Yes, the version of Windows 8 is fully legal and can be activated by:
  1. Activate the “Charms” menu by swiping in from the right
  2. Touch “Change PC Settings”
  3. Touch “Activate Windows”
  4. Enter the Windows 8 Product Key found on the power adaptor
The Cintiq Companion is equipped with an ambient light sensor. If the ambient light in your location changes, the screen brightness will adjust to compensate. Sometimes your hand moving across the sensor will cause a momentary change. If you would prefer to turn off the ambient light sensor you can do so as follows:
  1. Swipe from the right side of the screen to open the “Charms” menu
  2. Select “Settings”
  3. Select “Change PC Settings”
  4. Select  “General”
  5. Locate “Adjust my screen settings automatically”
  6. Slide the slider under this option to “off”.

To prevent yourself from accidentally turning off the Cintiq Companion, adjust the settings for the power button:

  • From the home screen, swipe upwards to reveal the “All apps” icon. Select this icon
  • Find and activate the “Control Panel” icon under the “Windows System” group
  • Assuming you are viewing the control panel in “Category” mode, select “Hardware and Sound"
  • Select “Power Options”
  • Scroll down to “Power Buttons and Lid” below the ConfigTDP and select “Power Button Action"
  • Select “Do Nothing” for each of “On Battery” or “Plugged In”
  • Save your settings and exit.
Although the screen first appears upside down, it corrects itself by the time the Windows log-in page appears. Windows retains your settings and you do not need to reset the orientation. This is a Windows feature.
The Cintiq Companion has been designed and tested for Windows 8.1 Technically, Microsoft allows Windows 8 Pro to be downgraded to Windows® 7 Pro without charge. Customers may do this by themselves, although the assumption is that the customer (usually a company) will have Windows®7 installation disks on hand. Cintiq Companion Intel® Core™ i7 with Intel® vPro™ technology (DTH-W1310E) configuration will have Windows®7 pre-installed. The process to downgrade is somewhat complicated and more information is available here:

and here:

http://www.microsoft.com/OEM/en/licensing/sblicensing/Pages/downgrade_rights.aspx#fbid=JZ WciDeeiBw

In the rare event that the Cintiq Companion crashes, you can reinstall Windows 8:

Step 1: Select “Settings”

Step 2: Select   “Change PC settings”.

Step 3: Select whether you want to refresh or reset your Cintiq Companion.

And, if you want to boot into the recovery partition while booting up, please press “F9” (note: update to the latest BIOS to Cintiq Companion first) once you power on the system, Then you can see “Trouble shooting” option under system restoration.
